The ferry ride was not much fun. The weather caused the waves to be much more noticeable inside the cabin. I took some Dramamine because I knew this was going to be a much rockier ride, but the medicine made me very sleepy. I went in and out of sleep over the course of the trip – about 7 hours. We made it to Pireaus port just fine, and got a taxi to the hostel. By the time we all hit the bed, it was 1am and we were exhausted.
No one wanted to get up early, so we all slept in. Allie and I ventured out to find a grocery store and we were not the only ones with that plan. I guess Saturday mornings are the time for everyone to do their shopping, because the store, and the market streets, were full of people. Little old Greek ladies aren’t sweet or mild, either. They will nudge their bony arms in front of you in line, especially if they see that you have a lot of groceries to buy and don’t know they system all that well. It was chaos until Allie and I took a check-out line shoulder to shoulder and prevented anyone from getting in front of us.
But, we did make it back to the hotel eventually. We are trying to budget this week well, so we bought groceries that we can cook in our little kitchenette. Our room comes with a mini fridge, kitchen sink, and a stove with 2 eyes. It’s great, actually. I had a wonderful time sautéing, chopping, and stirring. I made delicious beans and rice dish, doctored up some spaghetti sauce and chopped up my salad stuff. The funny thing while I was grocery shopping was trying to buy the generic brand, which was much cheaper. The only problem is that the grocery’s generic brand is only in Greek. Everywhere I went I had to hold up the fancier label with the English and Greek and compare it to the generic label with only Greek. I did this with the pepper and spices I wanted to buy to make my food taste better.
The rest of Saturday was spent doing laundry, watching movies and reading. We have our own balcony with a stellar view of the Acropolis.
Sunday morning I went to the same Anglican Church. Again, it was very sweet. I love how the liturgy is the same all over the world. It was nice to say the same words that I say at Holy Cross. I don’t know why, but there were tons of people out walking this morning. None of the shops are open on Sundays, but the streets were filled with people, and the squares had several different groups performing live music.
I spent the rest of the day researching for my Easter break trip with Mom and reading. This was the last day of Spring Break. Tomorrow we meet up with the group to go to a museum and go on some walk that Krentz has planned out for us.

Bean,
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be getting more adventurous with your cooking. Go for it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You may never have an experience like this again. Carpe Diem.
